I didn't mind the extra price and picked up a few extras (multiple computers, video, etc) to make the process more easy. If you decline these extras, they will continually go down in price to entice you to pick them up. Want to backup at a reasonable speed? Extra. Want to back up more than once a day? Extra. Want to back up files larger than 1GB? Extra. Want to automatically back up movie files? Extra. But the first sign of trouble is the up-sell. They offer unlimited data backup for a reasonable price, so I gave it a shot.įirst thing is, they're not as polished as Carbonite, which is fine, they're cheaper. ZipCloud.Com is a website like Carbonite which advertises that they will back up your computer, to their "cloud", in case of computer failure. Unfortunately Zipcloud was no help whatsoever. And you won't know that until you have lost everything - and restored "EVERYTHING" for YOU to sort through. SO, I conclude: "Writing a Backup Program is easy Writing a good total system Restore Program (restore as of a specific date) is damn tough to get right. I've spent the last year trying to find and sort out the latest version from hundreds or thousands of versions and files of some very critical ongoing project-files. Yes, I got every version of every file in every directory that I ever owned or modified - maybe a dozen versions of my files, and rather than Last Modification Date -> they ALL have the date and time of RESTORATION !!! Help is supposed to be within hours, (free or delux payment plan) Despite repeated requests for general "Total System Recovery" strategy/Guidence - I NEVER got ANY help.Įventually I picked a root-directory, and restored everything. Lost the entire disk, everything I ever knew and know. Then I had a hard drive failure, no time to prepare. I even checked a few times, and specific versions of specific files were in deed there. every day at 9:am I got a report of a few files being backed up to the cloud. We felt we got more than we hoped for and it was very easy to use. Overall they did exactly what they said they would do. They have slight drawbacks like not having a large sync folder and some features cost extra, but these were very minor for us. ZipCloud has become a favorite of ours because they combine online backup and cloud storage within the same service. Since the software was very easy to use and self explanatory we haven't needed tech support for anything. The recipient must sign up for a free account with ZipCloud to access files that are shared with them. To share files either use the Sync Folder for multiple computers or use the web interface to share with anyone. Using the Sync Folder gets files from one computer to another and also opens up the opportunity to share with others. The way ZipCloud handles file syncing is by providing a free 1GB sync folder with the online backup account. At this time you can access the site via mobile phone and download images and music. It's very easy, simply navigate to the files you want to restore and download them using the software on the computer or through their website. Getting your files back should they be lost, is crucial. This setting can be changed to unlimited in the settings area. Initial backups can take a while otherwise. There is a 2MB upload limit which is good for the first backup. All it takes is a little bit of knowledge about where your files are stored. Once the software is installed, the backup process begins immediately. They have mastered the art of making it easy to get started. Installing ZipCloud is easy on both Mac and PC. It is much easier to navigate the files and share them. Other improvements are that the website is cleaner and more responsive. It has a calender for specific days, the ability to set a daily backup start time, and a 'pause between times' section. The settings have been improved to include a much more effective scheduling tool. This makes it really easy to back up specific files and folders without having to navigate to them using the manual selection method. They have added a 'Drag & Drop' functionality to the online backup software. The new version of ZipCloud has many new features.
